Go West, Young Man

...we did. So now what?

I've jumped on the blogging bandwagon, a bit behind my friends who use blogs to post on their fabulous, jet setting, carbon-consuming lifestyles. I didn't know blogs existed when I lived my life under a coconut tree, although it would've made for more entertaining reading than my current reality.

If we measured wealth in dirty diapers, I'd be frickin' loaded. My relentless motion, pingpong across the United States and out into the Pacific, has changed into a constant orbit around my son. He's awesome, I can spout banalities that make non-parents barf. I know, I used to be one of them.

"Everything changes when you have a baby," blissed out mothers would tell me, the bleary eyed neophyte. And my personal favorite, the mantra of all those who look on the sleeping baby enviously as their brats run screaming around, "TREASURE EVERY MOMENT."

Yup, I do. 3 am, 3:15, 3:37, 4:06, every single moment, I am ecstatic to be awake and TREASURING the new reality. Although I think I used to enjoy the night more when I knew when I awoke the next afternoon it would all be a hazy memory, to be rehashed over a mimosa.

Cheers! Despite flashes of longing for days that stretch before me like a blank page, the chemical and hormonal changes in my brain allow me to take profound pleasure in the tiny victories in m day. Mikey finally gumming a banana and liking it makes up for the months of swatting purees away with the indignation of a ruler.
